Main Objective:

Design of electronic circuits and associated technologies for the development and support of Class I and II medical devices. Provide technical support to the department in the areas of electronic design, research, new or enhanced circuit analysis, simulation methods and technical documentation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • May provide engineering expertise in any or all of these areas: design, analysis and testing of Imaging and Resection electronics. Including system architecture, high density fpgas, ddr3/4, high-speed serdes, mipi-csi, high power motor drivers.
  • Select and specify electronic and electrical components based on function, cost, availability, reliability, etc. for the use in the products manufactured
  • Hands-on debug and rework of designs from proof-of-concept through production
  • Work with multidisciplinary teams of design, software, mechanical, test, and production engineers to create new Imaging and Resection electronics hardware.
  • May be required to provide sustaining support for existing product lines. This may include component second sourcing, analysis and resolution of field issues and/or manufacturing issues.
  • Ability to understand current designs to support continual improvement activities and interfacing with production.
  • Interface with pcb designers circuit layout placement and routing to maintain circuit performance and signal integrity.
  • Support of Quality System deliverables (e.g. CAPA, investigations, DHR).
  • Create and optimize test plans including Design V&V protocols and may perform and/or manage these tests including results and conclusions.
  • Write ECNs for products to correct errors and to resolve production difficulties
  • May be required to support development of budgets and timelines for projects and design history file deliverables for assigned projects, adhering to design control procedures.
  • Provide Regulatory department technical support for assigned projects as needed.
  • Support Marketing and Product Management with technical information to be used for training and marketing of assigned products as needed.
  • Report progress and status of assigned projects on a timely basis.
  • Some required domestic travel to support vendors and/or customers may be required.

Education and Experience:

Minimum of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering; MS preferred. At least seven years relevant engineering experiences required.  Medical device company experience preferred.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements/Specialized Courses and/or Training:

  • Expert understanding of electronic design (high-speed digital, motor drivers and analog), EMC/EMI mitigation, manufacturing and assembly.
  • Must be a hands-on engineer and excited to work in a fast paced environment.
  • Proficient in electronics troubleshooting from component level through system level.
  • Strong and demonstrable knowledge of electronic test equipment (oscilloscopes, waveform analyzers, and typical lab equipment).
  • Knowledge of electronic design tools (schematic capture, pcb layout, simulation tools), preferably Altium.
  • Understanding of digital circuits and implementation including high-speed programmable components (e.g. FPGAs), DDR memory, MIPI-CSI, HDMI.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of full life medical product development preferred.
  • Experience with testing and rework of high-speed digital and power electronics.
  • Electronics environmental testing and packaging for challenging applications.
  • Working knowledge of medical device electrical safety standards preferred.
  • Knowledge of endoscopic surgery preferred.
  • Knowledgeable of FDA and ISO guidelines for the development of medical devices preferred.
  • Strong communication skills and accountability to project deliverable timing.

Machine, Tools, and/or Equipment Skills:

Knowledge of oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, logic analyzers, waveform analyzer, electrical testing equipment, PC and instrumentation. Bench top testing, troubleshooting and rework with typical lab equipment.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to define problems, collects data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to comprehend and apply mathematical principles to the degree required to perform the job based upon job requirements.

Language and Communication Skills:

Ability to comprehend and apply language skills to the degree required to perform the job based upon the job requirements listed above.  Ability to verbally communicate ideas and issues effectively to other team members and management. Ability to write and record data and information as required by procedures.
